MRS. NOLA BERNICE POWELL NELSON March 6, 1928 ~ September 11, 2017 Mrs. Nola B. Powell Nelson was the fourth child out of four, of Minnie Etta Powell and John Wesley Powell Sr., all of which have preceded her in death. She grew up in Austin, Travis County, Texas and professed a faith in Christ at an early age becoming a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. L.L. Campbell. Upon arriving in Dallas, she united with Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where for many years she gave regular service to the Sunday School as a teacher, Mis- sion work and BTU. Her public education was through the Austin Independent School System.  After public school, she entered Huston- Tillotson College where she met and united in Holy Matrimo- ny on December 27, 1947 to John Henry Nelson of Cameron, Milam County, Texas.  To this union, one child was born, Minthia Jean Nelson. Her career began in the early 1950's in Dallas.  Nola was the first Black female trained as a medical technologist at St. Paul Hospital (Dallas).  She went on to the V.A. Hospital where she retired June, 1989 as Supervisor of Hematology. Once retired, she was able to work her flower gardens, crochet and play bridge of which she was a member of several clubs. Other churches of affiliations are Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church, Greater Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church and United Christian Missionary Baptist Church. After a long illness, she departed this life on Monday, Septem- ber 11, 2017.  She is survived by her husband of 71 years, John Henry Nelson; her only child, Minthia Nelson (Dallas); a cousin, Mrs. Marion James (Dallas); Two nephews, Herbert Wesley Powell (Huntsville, Alabama) and Ronald Powell (San Diego, California) and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
