Mabel G. Higgins Stevenson was the first born to the parentage of George and Mary Higgins of Waxahachie, Texas. She was preceded in death by her both parents, sister and husband. She attended Oak Lawn High School in Waxahachie, TX. She continued her education at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama where she received a bachelor of science degree in science and literature. She also did extensive post graduate studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She started her teaching career at Booker T. Washington public school system in Forney, Texas. She later moved to Detroit, Michigan where she continued her teaching career in the Detroit public school system for over 25 years until her retirement in 1977. After retirement, she later relocated back to the Waxahachie area where she was very active in the local community with the Citizens for Progress and NAACP. She met and married Clarence Stevenson who preceded her in death. She united with the Joshua Chapel AME Church at an early age. While in Michigan, she united with the Oak Grove AME Church serving as stewardess. Returning to Waxahachie, she reunited with her home church Joshua Chapel where she served under Rev. Virgil Bell, Sr.; Rev. I. B. Wells, Sr.; Rev. O. T. Austin, Sr.; Rev William T. Vaughan, Jr.; Rev. Dr. L. R. Emmanuel, D. D.; and Rev. Samuel Baker. She remained a stewardess emeritus until her death.. She departed this life on Monday, October 12, 2009 leaving to cherish her memories the following cousins: Elois Bland of San Angelo Texas, Hattie Jean Railback of Los Angeles California, Ann Morgan of Dallas Texas, and Marce Le Hall of Hutchins Texas. She had several specials friends: Jean Woods, Victor & Laura Pointer, Mr. Bertrand Maxwell, Sr, Mrs. Robbie Howard, Mrs. Geneva Crawford, and Damian Allen all of Waxahachie Texas.
