Leonard Carroll Davis, commonly known as Carroll, was the fourth child born to Robert and Mary Carroll Davis on June 19, 1921. He graduated from Oak Lawn in 1938 and worked several menial jobs before joining the United States Army in 1942.
He served in the South Pacific, Saipan, Oahu, Hawaii, and the Marianas during World War II. After discharge, Carroll attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where in 1949, he received his bachelor's degree majoring in Economics. He spent several years in California ultimately returning to his Waxahachie roots and began his own construction company. Carroll united in marriage with Marie Baker, and they had one daughter, Linda Carol. They were married 18 years at the time of Marie's passing. In addition to being a single father, he started building and remodeling individual houses, churches and commercial buildings all over North and Central Texas. He estimated he built hundreds of homes and churches during his career. He enjoyed his chosen profession so much he did not retire until he was 80 years old.
Mr. Carroll was very concerned about the redevelopment of East Waxahachie and served on many boards and committees related to this topic. He felt all people deserved the chance to own a safe and affordable house but knew not everyone had a fair opportunity for homeownership, so he kept working to make those dreams a reality. He was so proud of how he personally built two subdivisions that are still in use today. He said, "I didn't get rich doing this, but I had a lot of fun, and I helped people."
Mr. Davis was a long-time member of Joshua Chapel A.M.E. Church where he held several positions including Janitor, Sunday School Superintendent, Steward, and Trustee.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brother, Clarence; and sisters, Florence and Robbie. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Linda Baker (Eric); grandson, Arrington Clayton; great granddaughter, Shalisha Harris; brother, Martin Van Davis; nephews, James A. Boyd (Barbara) and Earl L. Lair (Linda); plus a host of other relatives and friends.
