Obituary

Eula Mae Brown Yancy, the daughter of the late Robert Lee Brown and Junie Lee Boger Brown, was born April 5, 1937, in Hawkins, Texas. She accepted Christ at an early age through Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Hawkins, Texas. She was an active member of the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF), Sunday School and choir. Eula is a 1955 graduate of the Hawkins Independent School District where she developed and displayed her athleticism. She played softball, tennis and participated in track and field events. She was also an outstanding basketball player. Her versatility on the basketball court allowed her to play several positions on offense and defense. She was famous for her "hook shot", which she even made from half court. Her skills on the court earned her a spot on the All-American Basketball Team and first place gold medals and trophies in basketball tournaments. Although a phenomenal basketball player, she received a tennis scholarship to Tennessee A&I State University in Nashville, TN. This is where she met and befriended Wilma Rudolph when Rudolph stayed on the campus while training for the Olympics. She also frequented the home of Mary McCloud Bethune during her college career. In 1959, Eula moved to Dallas, TX. She joined Smith Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church and was actively involved in the church throughout the years. She served as a Trustee and Director of the Young People's Division (YPD) of the Women's Missionary Society. She was a member of the Allen Christian Endeavor Fellowship, sang in the Senior Choir, served as one of the Daughters of Smith. Not only was she a member of Smith Chapel, she started her career there as a Kindergarten teacher at the nursery to include other duties such as driving the church vehicle to transport children to and from Kindergarten on a daily basis and organizing activities and programs. After moving to Dallas she met Clinton Edward Yancy and they were united in marriage in 1961. Four wonderful children were born to this union. Eula and Clinton were married 31 years until his passing in 1992. Eula used her special talents and gifts that she was blessed with to help in shaping and molding the lives of youth of all ages. She began as a Kindergarten teacher for five and six year olds in several private day care centers. She also became a sponsor and counselor for D.C.C.A.C. summer youth programs. In 1973 she became employed by the Dallas Independent School District as a teacher's assistant. She retired in 1999 after twenty-six years of touching the lives of youth of all ethnicity. She was a mother figure and mentor to two children from Ethiopia, Saba and Reasom Yohannes. Because of her winning and giving personality, she was the professed favorite of everyone: "favorite sister", "favorite aunt", "favorite niece", "and favorite cousin". She was a great writer, especially poetry, and orator, serving as the chosen speaker on several occasions. She was also very creative in arts and crafts, making and decorating books for graduations, birthdays and special occasions. She was a great cook; her banana pudding was a family favorite. Eula was a great organizer and served as the Assistant Coordinator of the Fouke-Hawkins School Reunion until her passing. Her nurturing and giving spirit was displayed even more in 2000 when she became the caregiver for her daughter, Carletha for several years until her health prevented her from continuing. Eula was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Junie Brown; her husband, Clinton E. Yancy; six brothers, Buddy, Frank Sr., Charles, James McArthur, Thomas and Homer; and two sisters Helen Mosely and Peggy Tolbert. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters: Carletha Y.
