Derbie Dene Kirven Sowells was born in Teague , Texas to the parentage of George and Verta Lee Kirven. To this, union two children were born Alice and Derbie. She attended Booker T. Washington High School and then graduated from Furney Richardson High School , Teague , Texas at the age of 16. Upon graduating, she attended Madam C. J. Walker School of Cosmetology in Dallas , Texas and became a successful beautician. Later she was gainfully employed by Titches, as the first African American Sales Clerk in Dallas . For Forty-nine years, she was married to Vertis Sowells. To this union one child, Vertis Glenn Sowells, was born. Derbie confessed Christ at an early age and united with Gibson Chapel A.M.E. Church , Mexia , Texas . She moved to Dallas and united with Greater Garth Chapel A.M.E. Church where she served in different ministries. Derbie later joined the First Christian CME Church where she was an active member for 12 years. Later she united with Smith Chapel A.M.E. Church under the Pastorate of Rev James W.Ford. She was a dedicated member of the Smith Chapel Mass Choir until her health failed.
