Reflections of Life
Bertha Lee Evans was born in Oak Ridge, Louisiana on December 22, 1937 the second of six children born to the late Reverend Floyd and Mrs. Classie Evans.
Bertha received her education at the Oak Ridge Elementary, Morehouse High School and Union High School where she was elected as the Freshman Ms. Moreshouse queen.
In her younger years she accepted the Christ as her Lord,
and was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.
She married Levi Chriss on October 25, 1956. To this union six children were born. In 1965 they decided to relocate to Dallas. Bertha was employed with Dobbs House, Inc. for 42 years where she was a loyal and faithful employee until her retirement. Her joy was working in her garden, flower beds and cooking. She was a daily reader of her bible and all sorts of study books. She loved to work word find puzzles.
In 1966 their family united with the Bethany Missionary Baptist. Earlier Bertha became a member of the choir, participated in mission. Later she became a Deaconess, eventually serving as secretary for the Board. For a couple of years she baked Bethanys communion bread. She was active in Sunday School, faithful in attendance and support as, she loved Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. She was a loving, giving and accepting person.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, brother Woodrow Evans, sister Pauline Smith, and grandson Douglas Chriss, Jr.
She is survived by husband of 63 years; Levi Chriss, Sr, children - Brenda Williams (James), Stanley Chriss (Bernadette), Levi Chriss, Jr (Erma), Douglas Chriss, Sr (Lola), Gwendolyn Faye Adams and Angela Gaines (Roderick); 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Siblings - brother Joseph Evans (Ora), sister Mable Patterson and Brother-in-law Earnest Smith
all of Bastrop, La. Juliet Grace (Donald) of Schwertz, TX. and Debbie Caldwell (Mickey) of Hammond, La. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
