Biography

Mrs. Mary Ellen Morris Lowe was born to the parentage of Robert Morris and Minnie Hood Morris in Milford, Texas on February 12, 1908. She attended Kelly Miller School and united with the Pilgrim Rest United Methodist Church in Milford at an early age. Around the age of 20, she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she resided for nearly 75 years. While in California, she became a seamstress and a salad maker. She married George Lowe and was the mother of one daughter, Erma Lurlene.
Aunt Mary loved soap operas, politics, The History Channel, PBS, Oprah, and relating stories from the past to her family—who were her pride and joy. She was honored in February on the occasion of her 100th birthday with accolades from five generations of nieces and nephews. Proclamations from President George W. Bush and the City of Italy were read in her honor.
Aunt Mary, the last of her generation, was known for her tenacity and loved by all whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, beloved daughter; brother, Edgar Morris; sisters, Hallie Miller Ford and Olivia Morris Anderson; nieces Dorothy Black, Inez Tompkins, and Minnie Maude Anderson; and nephews, Early Anderson, Jr. and Clarence Williams.
Aunt Mary’s philosophy was to be honest, truthful, treat everybody right, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We will always remember her favorite scripture: Psalm 51:10 – “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
Aunt Mary peacefully fell asleep in the arms of her Father on Saturday, October 25, 2008. Her journey on Earth lasted 100 years, 8 months, and 13 days.
